Friday night held one of the most unexpected surprises. I was enjoying some great food from Pho Hoa Binh Friday afternoon with some friends when a guy came up and handed us a flyer for a hip-hop show. First of all, i was shocked since it was a hip-hop show around here that didn't include IMC on it. Little did I know what I was about to experience.
This guy turned out to be DJ Isis, who makes some ill ass music, and he was with a group a guys from Virginia Beach, VA. This group is called Rebel E Music, and they are a damn good collective of musicians.
Ced Hughes, Max Mega and Battle were the emcees for the night and I must say they fucking delivered. Gabe Niles started the night off with a sick DJ set on the 1s and 2s. He was spinning everything from Nas to the Rapture. Max Mega and Battle came up next, which then fed into Ced Hughes. Their set was damn amazing. Lyrically, it sounded like Lupe Fiasco and Slum Village joining the cipher. Production wise it sounded like the illegitimate son of the late great Jay Dilla and Daft Punk.
I'm not the dancing type at all but this show was a fucking dance fest (well you probably knew that from glancing at the flyer). I can't wait to catch these guys again in April when they play at BBKing's.
Here are links for the artists. Anybody that digs that kind of music should definitely check out Ced Hughes's mixtape and the Max Mega I posted up.
